French confectioners started producing two-piece, hinged pewter molds in the 1830s, allowing for detailed shapes. Cream was spooned in, the mold clamped shut, and the heavy pewter kept it cold; the result was a perfectly shaped dessert when unmolded. Molded ice cream was a luxury for high-society dinners and events, with popular shapes including flowers, animals, and patriotic figures like George Washington. The 18th Amendment (1920-1933) boosted ice cream consumption as people sought alternatives, increasing demand for molds.
