Rare Take Freely and Thankfully Wooden Bread Board

This breadboard is carved with a phrase I have not yet come across on a bread board: "Take Freely and Thankfully." A great collector’s piece.

Not quite perfectly round, approximately 10.5-11” in diameter

Thanks to the Corn Laws, in effect from 1815-1846, bread became a luxury item due to its high cost; in response, the growing middle class utilized ornate breadboards to display their wealth through the presentation of large, artfully arranged loaves at mealtimes.

The Corn Laws were British tariffs and trade restrictions on imported grain, enforced from 1815 to 1846, designed to keep domestic grain prices high, primarily benefiting landowners but sparking public outcry and economic debate, eventually leading to their repeal in 1846 as a victory for free trade advocates against protectionism.
